WHAT ARE RASPBERRY KETONES?
Raspberry Ketone, 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) butan-2-one, has already made its way onto the market. Originally raspberry ketones were used mainly in the cosmetic and food industries to impart a characteristic fruity odour to cosmetic and food products. Recently, however, studies have shown that raspberry ketones became most popular for their potential to help with fat loss.
WHERE DO RASPBERRY KETONES COME FROM?
Raspberry ketones are normally extracted from raspberries since their amounts are highest in the fruit. However, extraction of raspberry ketones from raspberries is extremely limited with only about 1-4mg of pure raspberry ketone extracted from a kilogram of fruit. This has made it one of the most expensive compounds to be used industrially. Raspberry ketone contains a substance that is very similar to synephrine. Synephrine is often marketed as a powerful weight loss support supplement and as raspberry ketone resembles synephrine, it has been suggested that it may help support a similar weight-loss effect. It's also natural and may help your weight-loss progression without the harsh side effects of synthetic diet compounds.
As mentioned before, raspberry ketones have exploded in the past couple of years as a prime fat loss ingredient. Earlier animal studies, performed at high doses, showed that raspberry ketones were able to prevent dramatic weight changes with high-fat diets, pointing towards altered fat metabolism in the body. More recently, another study was able to show that in fat cells, raspberry ketones have the ability to increase fat metabolism and reduce fat accumulation. In basic, less fat and a leaner body with a higher muscle mass.
BUT WILL THEY BENEFIT ME?
Studies suggest that raspberry ketone increased noradrenaline-induced fat-loss and it was concluded that this weight-loss support substance works through the enzyme lipase, which is responsible for freeing fatty acids from the fat cell during the process of fat utilization. When raspberry ketone is present in your system, it has been surmised that levels of this enzyme increase and therefore ups the rate of fatty acid release.
THE PARTNER IN CRIME L-CARNITINE
L-Carnitine is a natural amino acid which is involved in energy production, and it is one of the best-known supplements. Our bodies produce its own supply of L-carnitine, and it is also found in meat and poultry. L-Carnitine has multiple, multiple studies which have confirmed the benefits of supplementation. L-Carnitine is a supplement with a number of different uses, and while you'll find it in a wide variety of supplements, it is probably best known for its properties as a fat burner.
Carnitine plays a vital role in transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria of the cell where they are burnt for energy, and research has shown that more carnitine in the muscle results in more fat being burnt as an energy source during workouts and physical activity.
Using a greater proportion of fat for energy during exercise means the body is using less glycogen, meaning in turn that muscles can work for longer without becoming exhausted. L-carnitine also improves endurance by acting as a cellular buffer, neutralising the metabolic by-products of exercise which contribute to muscle fatigue, like lactic acid.
Carnitine has also been praised for its ability to enhance recovery, in part, due to its ability to stimulate the body's response to insulin which replenishes cellular glycogen. It has also been shown to enhance muscle repair and the cellular remodelling that accompanies new muscle tissue. Research has also indicated that L-carnitine plays a role in boosting the testosterone receptors and enhancing N.O production
HOW TO TAKE L-CARNITINE
Dosage ranges between 500mg and 2000mg per day, and this is sufficient to aid fat burning, promote endurance, enhance recovery and benefit from the effects. A lot of research has shown that it is best absorbed when it is taken together with a large dose of carbohydrates - 60-80g. You do NOT need to cycle carnitine.
BEST TIME TO TAKE L-CARNITINE
L-carnitine is usually taken in two ways depending on the goal, pre-workout to promote fat burning and endurance or post workout to enhance recovery. A good compromise is to split the desired dose into two and take half before and a half after training, making sure to pair it with a source of carbohydrates. Because L-carnitine stores in muscle, you can take at any time of day, but with carbohydrates making it quicker for absorption, it is best taken with the meal prior to the workout or with a carbohydrate powder, like Insul-X.
